The pearl of the Caribbean …
The Caribbean and its luxury image is embodied in the Saona Island, the crown jewel of the Parque Nacional del Este, an imposing land and sea reserve that preserves a very diversified ecosystem.
The island of Saona extends parallel south eastern tip of the the park, for a length of 22 kilometers and a width of 5 with an area of about 115 square kilometers.
The Island was previously inhabited by the Taino Indians, who named it Andamay, Christopher Columbus reached it on 14 September 1494 renaming it Bella Savonese in honor of Michele from Cuneo originally from Savona, a great navigator who was the first to spot it during a storm. So the name of the island originates from the Ligurian town of Savona, later changed into the current Saona.
The sanctuary has been officially protected since 1975 and is on a waiting list to be considered a World Heritage Site.
On the island of Saona we find only some fishing villages with wooden houses. The rest of its territorial geography is composed of beaches with crystal clear waters, marvelous natural pools, enchanting white beaches and palm forests and other species typical of the Caribbean eco system.
The day trip to the island of Saona and to its small village is definitely a must for those who travel in the Dominican Republic.
We will take you to Mano Juan, a true fishing village, the only populated place in Saona with its approximately 300 inhabitants, an interesting stop – over during our route.
During the visit to Mano Juan, you will have the opportunity to visit the Sanctuary of the Turtles and, if you are lucky and nature helps you, you can see the newly hatched turtles.
We will reach Saona da Bayahibe with our brand new fast spears, which also allow you to explore the island’s borders: “Canto de la Playa” the last and most incredible beach on the island of Saona.
Neat and unpolluted beach, ideal for relaxing and diving into its coral reefs.
After a delicious lunch at the beach with rice, fish, fruit and the extraordinary barbecued lobster, we will embark on our return trip to Bayahibe, we will leave the island to visit the mangrove forest till the rock pools, inhabited by starfish. A little advice: you can observe and even touch the starfish but do not pull them out of the water, they will die after only 5 seconds.
